H-E-B Community Innovation Scholars

Student at computerThe H-E-B Community Innovation Scholars program will provide students with opportunities to support nonprofit organizations in better understanding and using their data. Students will gain direct professional experience and contribute to increasing the community impact of San Antonio nonprofits.  This initiative provides students with research experience and financial support to engage in community service, enhancing their individual academic success and career preparation.

Real-World Experience

Selected participants will collaborate in teams on nonprofit data science projects, engaging in a 10-week curriculum with the following activities:

  • Orientation
  • Python practice & mini challenges
  • Weekly leadership development
  • Nonprofit introductions and data exploration
  • Targeted strategy for data
  • Weekly debriefs to work through challenges
  • Presentation & Research poster presentation
  • Final Presentation

Throughout the 10-week program, students will develop skills that can be applied in their professional careers.  Nonprofits collaborating with the College of AI, Cyber and Computing will benefit from the students' contributions. Developing frameworks that include:

  • Building or recommending how to build the infrastructure needed to make use of data
  • Determining unmet and possible data reporting and analysis needs
  • Address said needs through pilot projects
  • Building nonprofits' capacity to sustain gains made through projects
