AT&T Distinguished Lecture Series

Description

Abstract

What does it take to develop research that makes a meaningful contribution to information systems scholarship? In this lecture, I approach this question from three complementary perspectives: developing theory, building a research program, and evaluating scholarly contributions.

First, I introduce our recent work on Forgone-IT Identity, which examines how individuals respond when technological change renders established patterns of IT use unavailable. I discuss the theoretical puzzle that motivated the research, the central ideas underpinning the theory, and some of the challenges involved in developing and refining its contribution.

Second, I turn to the emerging research program we are developing in partnership with BNY, focused on human-led digital transformation and the future of work in the AI era. I outline the questions motivating the programme, including how AI is reshaping human expertise, learning, judgement, identity and relationships with technology, and consider the opportunities and challenges of building a coherent research agenda around a rapidly evolving phenomenon.

Finally, drawing on my experience as a Senior Editor at MIS Quarterly, I share reflections on what makes a compelling theoretical contribution, common challenges in developing manuscripts, and how researchers can strengthen the positioning and communication of their work.

Together, these perspectives offer insights into the process of developing, advancing and evaluating information systems research.
