AI Systems Engineering (Algorithms to Hardware)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming health, the economy, infrastructure, and national security. Next-generation deployable AI must run across the cloud-to-edge continuum with the highest efficiency and unnegotiable trustworthiness, even in resource-constrained, dynamic, or even adversarial environments.

The AI Systems Engineering research thrust of the Department of Computer Engineering addresses these demands through full-stack, cross-layer engineering of AI algorithms, software, systems, and hardware. We investigate (i) resource-, environment-, and hardware-aware, efficient, and trustworthy AI; (ii) AI-specific computing systems, processors, and heterogeneous accelerators; (iii) and rigorous co-design that jointly optimizes algorithms and hardware from model formulation to hardware implementation.

This thrust aligns with national priorities, accelerates AI innovation, strengthens the U.S. computing and chip design base, and delivers foundational advances and the U.S. workforce to design, deploy, sustain, and scale tomorrow’s AI.
